My interest in instrument building started when I was a teenager and has subsequently run parallel with my guitar playing interests. I built Appalachian dulcimers learning from
John Pearse's TV programme Music Room and upon leaving school undertook training for employment in the piano trade which resulted in working for the London based firm Fletcher & Newman.
I started building guitars as a hobby and carrying out minor repairs on acoustic guitars and violins. In 1994 I took a years training in advanced acoustic guitar and violin repair at Anniesland College in Glasgow, Scotland under the tutorage of Paul Hyland and William Kelday. I completed the course gaining best performance student award in the Higher National Certificate for musical instrument technology. In 1995 I undertook what was to result in a total of 4 years study at London Guildhall University (formerly the London College of Furniture) specialising in making early fretted instruments. Under the tutorage of Malcolm Prior (lutes) and Norman Myall (viols).
I graduated in 1999 with BSc hons in musical instrument technology. I moved to Leicester shortly after.
I am passionate about my work and the value of fine quality hand crafted instruments. An important element for me is that the customer becomes engaged in the design and building process. It becomes a two way process between luthier and musician with personal choices infusing the creative process.
